OUTPUTS VS OUTCOMES

Recently I came across an interesting podcast by Vikrama Dhiman, Head of product, Gojek. He was speaking on the ‘Lenny’s podcast’ about how PMs should operate when they are just starting in their career. And the key point he highlights is - ‘Focus on outputs, vs outcomes’!

This is contrary to the common notion i.e. to always focus on impact, or in other words outcomes, if you want to grow in an organization.

While chasing impact is important, it is super hard when you are just starting, as you have very less control on what you are working on. Less control because it is unlikely that you understand the company's vision, or are part of roadmap meetings etc.

So instead, your focus should be on getting things done. Deliver stuff, pick up things assigned to you & get them executed, help your teammates. Get your manager some leverage! It is still right to ask WHY while doing something, but probably wrong to try to control what you are doing. And this is a great way to build trust within your team!
